Chris Maines's 'Save Our Post Offices' petition has been signed by hundreds of local residents. Here he is with just some of the signatures.
Local Liberal Democrat leader Chris Maines is fighting plans to close local Post Offices. Chris and his Lib Dem colleagues are angry that government plans to close over 3,000 Post Offices include branches in our area.
Chris has been collecting petition signatures against closure of the Queensway branch in Petts Wood and the Green Street Green High Street branch.
Chris said "I'm not prepared to sit back and see our local Post Office network destroyed by the Labour government".
In the case of the Petts Wood branch, local residents would be forced to cross the railway bridge (a total of 40 steps) to use the branch on Fairway.
Customers who currently use the Green Street Green branch are being told they should use the branches at The Meadway or The Crescent.
Chris Maines said "Queensway and Green Street Green High Street are both 'one-stop' shopping locations - many residents visit them to use the Supermarket, Pharmacy and Post Office. Taking away the Post Office will mean an extra journey for all local residents, but will particularly affect elderly residents"
Labour's decision to close over 3,000 Post Offices comes on top of the 4,000 Post Offices which closed under the Conservatives.
There isn't much time left to save our Post Offices - the consultation period ends this Friday. Local residents can join the fight by writing to the Post Office to express their anger at Labour's plans to close our Post Offices. The address to write to is:
Paul Simmonds, Head of Area, Post Office Ltd, c/o National Consultation Team, PO Box 2060, Watford, WD18 8ZW.
