Lib Dems Stop Tory Stealth Phone Masts

October 15, 2005 12:00 AM

Mobile phone mast.Bromley Liberal Democrats stop Tories sneaking a phone mast onto every street.

Cllr Grace Goodlad says "Today I am so proud to be a Liberal Democrat, helping local people in their fight to stop more and more phone masts" A Liberal Democrat motion demanding further research into the health risks associated with mobile phone masts before allowing even greater numbers to be sited in the Borough has blocked Conservative plans to sneakily introduce mobile phone masts into lampposts around the Borough. Earlier this year Liberal Democrat Councillors pushed through policy protecting the interests of Bromley residents from rumoured Tory plans to get more income from phone masts through the back door. On Wednesday 12th October a meeting of the Environment PDS committee discussed proposals to introduce "dual use lampposts", where phone masts are "hidden in innocuous lampposts".

The Conservative led committee was forced to agree with Council policy introduced earlier this year by Bromley Liberal Democrat Council Group in response to the justifiably high levels of public concern about the health risks arising from the proliferation of phone masts. Many concerned residents attended the meeting, as there is huge public opposition to this scheme.

Cllr Goodlad says "It is time that Conservative Environment Portfolio holder Cllr Taylor listened to the concerns of real people in Bromley - I will be at his meeting on Thursday when the final decision is made - and I won't let him get away with ignoring the views of the people he is meant to represent.

"This is such a serious issue, and the people of Bromley have made their views clear. I won't hesitate to fight for what's right", she finished.
