The issuing of tickets by traffic wardens in Bromley should be based on road safety and keeping schools and shopping areas free from traffic rather than raising cash for the Council, say the Borough's Liberal Democrats.
Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr David McBride criticised the fact there was an "ideal" number for ticket issues within the current contract and asked Bromley's Portfolio Holder for the Environment to re-prioritise when the contract is re-negotiated.
"The fact there seems to be a target for ticket issues means that a lot of residents are getting tickets in their residential roads at 8 or 9 o'clock at night," said Cllr McBride. "These residents are not causing obstructions, in fact very often they are making sure roads are not blocked by parking slightly on the pavements. The Council's priority really ought to be to keep schools clear and to deal with road safety issues, not raising money in such a blatant way," he added.
