Lib Dems only 633 votes behind in Bromley & Chislehurst - Labour 4th
At the Bromley & Chislehurst parliamentary by-election on 29 June 2006, Liberal Democrat candidate Ben Abbotts caused a sensation when he reduced the Conservative majority, in what was previously the Conservative's 17th safest seat in the country, from over 13,000 to a wafer thin 633. Labour came a poor fourth behind UKIP. The decrease in the Conservative majority percentage was the worst by-election result for the Conservative party in a Tory held seat since Wirral South in February 1997 - the last days of the John Major premiership. The BBC called it "a stunning result", "a very bad night for David Cameron" and a "very, very good night for the Liberal Democrats". At the next General Election Bromley & Chislehurst constituency boundaries will be changed to consist of the following wards: Bickley, Bromley Town, Chislehurst, Cray Valley West, Mottingham and Chislehurst North, Plaistow and Sundridge. Local Liberal Democrat teams work all year round for local residents.
