A mixed response to the "Super Loop"
London Liberal Democrats have presented a mixed response to the Mayor's proposed Super Loop project.
On the one hand, we acknowledge that transport infrastructure in London is in dire need of substantial investment, however, we believe that Sadiq Khan's proposal falls short of meeting London’s transportation needs.
We have voiced concerns regarding certain aspects of the project's details, including the lack of integration with current transport options and limited service to non-central areas. Some parts of this Super Loop are merely existing bus routes being re-badged with a new logo.
The project does not provide the type of comprehensive coverage that London requires, especially given the challenges that ULEZ presents to outer London boroughs this coming August. In fact, only 40% of the Super Loop will be in place before the ULEZ changes come into force.
Rather than a heavy investment in a single project, the party proposes a more targeted approach that can provide up-to-the-task solutions for the areas that need them. We have suggested increasing the number of bus routes and cycle paths and investing in local transport options.
Additionally, Liberal Democrats are concerned that the potential cost of the Super Loop project is not justifiable when the budgets of other essential services, including health and social care, are being cut.
London Liberal Democrats have pledged to look into more cost-effective alternatives and have proposed a focus on the improvement of the existing transport network through the use of innovative technology and the promotion of environmentally friendly alternatives to driving. By prioritising sustainable and accessible transport options, the party believes that it can provide Londoners with a comprehensive solution to the city's transport issues without incurring the high costs of the Super Loop project.
