Bromley Picturehouse Closure - is Bromley becoming a Cultural Wasteland?
Lib Dem Councillor Sam Webber has called on Conservative-run Bromley Council to help the campaign to 'Save Bromley Picturehouse', following the announcement that it will close on 1st August.
In his formal question to the Council meeting on 15 July, Cllr Webber asked for details about any action the Council had taken “to ensure that another gem in Bromley's Cultural crown can be protected for future generations and ensure this important art deco building in central Bromley is safeguarded?“
The campaign to Save the Picturehouse has been led by a local group of residents and cinema lovers. nearly 4,700 people have signed their petition. The cinema is owned by Cineworld and there are rumours that they are trying to sell all their UK sites. There’s little the Council can do to intervene in this, but they can look at making sure the building is protected from development to ensure the building itself is preserved. It seems that part of the building (the front) is in the conservation area, and Cllr Webber has said he will work with planning officers and councillors to see if this protection can be extended.
If you can join us in supporting the campaign, please do sign the group's petition and join their Facebook page.
