Liberal Democrats call for a new Burglary Response Guarantee

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home but the reality is that this Conservative government has left our police forces overstretched and under-resourced.

Families should have the confidence that if someone does break into their home, the criminal will be caught and punished. Conservative Government failures have allowed criminals to get away with their crimes and left victims feeling let down and vulnerable.

Speaking on BBC Radio London this week, London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon said “In London last year, 37,726 burglaries were reported and yet in one in three, the police don't even bother to turn up to see what's happened and to support you.

‘The Lib Dems are calling for a new Burglary Response Guarantee, making sure there is a duty on every police service up and down the country to turn up to somebody's home and that they will visit, they will support the victim of the crime and make sure it's properly investigated.”

In the absence of any action on this by the Home Secretary, we will add this guarantee to the Victims and Prisoners Bill currently making its way through Parliament.

Further we’ll deliver on our pledge to recruit 20,000 extra police officers. We’ll give the police the resources they need to return to proper neighbourhood policing, address the current shortage of detectives and establish a new Online Crime Agency to tackle online fraud and abuse. We want people to feel safe again.
