Liberal Democrats secure historic ULEZ amendment to Sadiq Khan’s budget
On Thursday, the London Assembly debated Mayor Sadiq Khan’s budget for London for 2023-2024. The Liberal Democrat Group secured an historic amendment to the Mayor’s budget – it is simple, affordable and will be effective in helping people in Outer London to cope with the Ultra Low Emission Zone expansion.
The Lib Dems proposed:
- To double the scrappage scheme with an additional £100 million and to allow Blue Badge holders to apply.
- To invest £25 million in bus services in Outer London, including demand-responsive buses such as Go Sutton Bus.
The amendment was carried unanimously. Labour and the Conservatives abstained.
At the next consideration of the budget by the Assembly on 23 February, the Mayor needs to formally respond to the amendment. Lib Dem Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon and the Lib Dem group will continue to push for more mitigation measures to go hand in hand with the ULEZ expansion.
This is a massive win for London Liberal Democrats and for Londoners in Outer London. The ball is now in the court of the Mayor of London.
